Labour and material shortage may impact retrofit scheme

The Government’s push to get hundreds of thousands of homes retrofitted has become more urgent, as the cost of fuel rises and the clock ticks down on climate action targets.

It is working on boosting demand for retrofitting and a new package of supports for householders is expected in the next few days.

However, supply of both materials and workers could become an issue if demand takes off.

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland estimates 17,000 workers will be needed for the planned programme of retrofitting 500,000 homes by 2030.

Apartment & Duplex Building Defects Survey Launched

A series of online surveys are being launched by the Working Group to Examine Defects in Housing. The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien, TD, established the group to examine defects in housing.

The Working Group will use the survey responses to inform its report on the nature, scale and difficulties arising from discovery of such defects. It will also provide information on the costs and levies associated with remediating defects.

he Programme for Government sets out a number of commitments in respect of the important policy area addressing building defects. It commits to an examination of defects in housing, having regard to the recommendations of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing’s report, “Safe as Houses ?” . Housing for All, the Government’s national plan on housing to 2030, reiterates this commitment.
