The owners of around 25,000 Celtic Tiger-era apartments have been waiting up to two-and-a-half years to repair “unacceptable” fire safety risks in their homes, with red tape blamed for delays to crucial government grants. In 2022, a government-commissioned working group found that up to 100,000 apartments and duplexes built between 1991 and 2013 may have structural, fire safety and water leak defects.
Alarm bells had started ringing in 2011 after the High Court ordered the evacuation of Dublin’s Priory Hall complex because of fire risks to its 256 residents. The defects found by the 2022 working group meant affected homeowners were living in unsafe accommodation. Many were landed with eye-watering repair bills to bring their homes back up to standard. Outrage over these bills sparked protests, piling pressure on the then-government to help fund emergency repairs.
