There has been an increase in the last year in the number of people availing of the scheme that allows the State an equity stake in their homes in return for funding to purchase their first property.
Figures for the three months to September 2026 show 654 drawdowns, bringing the total number of drawdowns approved by the First Home Scheme to 6,537 since it started operating in 2022. The figures show 37pc of the total drawdowns have come in the past year. And 12,000 applications to use the scheme have been approved.
The scheme was set up to provide funding to first-time buyers who, despite having a deposit and mortgage approval in place, still could not cover the cost of a new-build home. It is also available to tenants who have received a notice of termination due to the landlord wishing to sell the property. In exchange for providing funding, the scheme takes an equity stake of up to 30pc in the home.
