Prices rose by almost 7pc in the year, the Central Statistics Office said. This was due to the fact that prices were up 0.2pc in the month across the country.
Dublin prices rose by 0.1pc in May, and were almost 5pc higher than a year ago.
But apartment prices in the capital fell compared with a year ago, the CSO said.
Outside of the Dublin area there was a rise of just 0.1pc in prices in May. But compared with a year ago prices outside the capital were up 8.5pc.
Overall, prices are a third lower than they were during the height of the property boom in 2007. The average house is now changing ownership for €222,000, calculations by economist Dermot O’Leary of Goodbody Stockbrokers show. This is up €14,000 in the past year.
